Erie
is a city located in the northwest corner of Pennsylvania, along the shores of Lake Erie. The city of Erie is the fourth-largest city in the state and has a population of approximately 102,000. It's located near Cleveland, Ohio, Buffalo, New York and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Erie is known mostly as a manufacturing and heavy industry town, although in recent years, tourism has become more of a factor for the economy. In 1972, Erie received the "All-American City Award," and it's also called Gem City due to the shimmer of Lake Erie. The city serves as the primary access point for, not only Lake Erie, but all of the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence Seaway. There are tons of attractions and outdoor activities in and around the city, including a casino and horse racetrack, the Erie speedway, Erie Zoo and Presque Isle State Park. Erie is also in the heart of Pennsylvania's picturesque wine country. Many are surprised to find Erie to be a city of culture. The Erie Philharmonic has been in continuous existence since 1913 and the Lake Erie Ballet performs in programs throughout the year. Downtown Erie offers eclectic shopping and the historic Warner Theatre was renovated in 2007 and is the hub of Erie's Civic Center. Millionaires Row, which is a collection of 19th century Victorian mansions, is located on West 6th Street. Other attractions include the Erie Land Light, built in 1818 and replaced in 1867 and the Bicentennial Tower, which offers panoramic views of Lake Erie.

The Northeast Corner of Pennsylvania ,near Lake Erie, has a climate typical of the Great Lakes. It is classified as humid continental. This means four distinct seasons, with hot, muggy summers and cold, snowy winters. This region is located in the snow belt that stretches from Cleveland to Syracuse. Winters are typically cold, with heavy lake effect snow, but also with occasional stretches of mild weather that causes accumulated snow to melt. The northwest region of the state experiences a full range of weather events, including snow, ice, rain, thunderstorms and fog. One of the snowiest places in the U.S., the adverse winter conditions here have been known to cause "whiteouts."
