DuBois
is located approximately 90 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. As of the 2000 census, the population was 8,123 resident. Founded in 1812 as a lumber town, coal mining later became the chief industry for the DuBois region. Today, the city of DuBois is known as a center for arts and entertainment in the area, and is the hometown of Educational Entertainment Specialist Gene Allen, known for his character education programs for schools and libraries. DuBois is also home to the Winkler Art Gallery, and the theater groups known as the Reitz Theater Players and Cultural Resources, Inc. These fine theater groups perform a number of productions each year at the Paul G. Reitz Theater in downtown DuBois. Other things to do in the area include camping, hiking, golf, shopping the many specialty shops in downtown DuBois, as well as area malls. DuBois is located on the Groundhog Trail, which includes several award-winning wineries. Several state parks and state forests and the Allegheny National Forest are just a short drive from DuBois, which offer a multitude of outdoor activities, as well as scenic drives, especially in the autumn when the changing leaves are at their peak. The city of DuBois is located at the junctions of Interstate-80 and Routes 219 and 322.

Central Pennsylvania experiences a climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are pleasant and mild, and winters are cold with snow. Snowfall is variable with some winters bringing only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer.
