Emporium
is a picturesque little town nestled in the mountains of Cameron County in north-central Pennsylvania. It's approximately 100 miles west-northwest of the town of Williamsport. Emporium is a historic town that serves as the county seat and had a population of 2,526 as of the 2000 census, which is about the same number of residents as in the year 1900. Legend has it that an agent of the Holland Lumber Company carved the word "Emporium," which means "market," into a tree in 1785 at the site that later became the town of Emporium. However, the town was originally called Shippen for Edward Shippen who settled there in 1810. The name changed to Emporium in 1861 when it was elected as county seat. Early businesses included lumber mills, railroads, timber rafting and tanning. Early in the twentieth century, the town of Emporium had large powder plants and manufactories of radio tubes, incandescent lamps, paving brick, flour, iron, lumber and sole leather. Attractions include the nearby 386-acre Sizerville State Park, which is surrounded by the larger Elk State Forest. Many recreational opportunities are available, including hiking and exploring the natural public lands.

Central Pennsylvania experiences a climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are pleasant and mild, and winters are cold with snow. Snowfall is variable with some winters bringing only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer.
