Jim-Thorpe
is a small town in Carbon County in the mountains of east-central Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the population was 4,804. Called the "Switzerland of America," the borough of Jim Thorpe is the gateway to the beautiful Pocono Mountains. Budget Travel Magazine recently named the town as one of "America's Coolest Small Towns." Jim Thorpe offers a multitude of recreational activities, with it's prime location in the Poconos. Choose from mountain biking, white water rafting, hiking, fishing and much more. It's also a well-known tourist destination among railroading fans, and is home to beautiful, historic architecture. Some of the attractions in Jim Thorpe include the Asa Packer Museum and Harry Packer Mansion. Both sit on a hill overlooking the town. Jim Thorpe is home to the Anthracite Triathlon, which is an Olympic distance triathlon open to both amateurs and professionals. The swimming portion of it occurs at Mauch Chunk Lake and the bike course goes through several small mining towns, as well as Jim Thorpe. The running portion of the anthracite Triathlon is along the former path of a historic switchback railroad. The town of Jim Thorpe has a little bit of everything, including culture, galleries, festivals and a great location. It's proximity to the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and New York City makes it a great getaway.

East Central Pennsylvania experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are generally mild, and winters are cold with snow although the snowfall is variable. Some winters bring only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer, although these type of storms are not the norm.
