White-Haven is a borough located in Luzerne County in northeastern Pennsylvania. It's situated in the heart of the Pocono Mountains region, which is the most popular tourist destination in the state. As of the 2000 census, the population of White Haven was 1,182. White Haven was established in 1824 by industrialist Josiah White. The community is located along the Lehigh River, which connects it to the small town of Jim Thorpe. This historic little town was very popular in the 1800s, due to its status as a key link in the shipping network. It was in White Haven that the "canal met the rails," where the Lehigh Canal began its' southerly journey downstream and the Lehigh & Susquehanna Railroad stretched north. The town prospered through the 1800s. One can imagine seeing hundreds of railroad cars, piled high with coal and timber, waiting to be transferred onto the Lehigh Canal barges. A flood washed out the canal in 1862, which changed the course of the town. Today, White Haven is known as the northernmost gateway to Lehigh Gorge State Park, and for its rails-to-trails hiking and biking opportunities. Other attractions include a restored, 29-ton Union Pacific caboose-museum that houses railroad memorabilia. White Haven is located approximately 17 miles south of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and four miles west of the I-476 and I-80 interchange.

White Haven Weather & Climate

East Central Pennsylvania experiences a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are generally mild, and winters are cold with snow although the snowfall is variable. Some winters bring only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer, although these type of storms are not the norm.
