Rices-Landing
is a historic borough in Greene County in southwestern Pennsylvania, approximately 60 miles south of Pittsburgh. As of the 2000 census, the population was 443 full-time residents. The small town is located along the western bank of the Monongahela River. There is a legend in the town that in 1775, while traveling to Fort Duquesne, George Washington camped in the area that is now Rices Landing. Rices Landing is situated on a narrow, level river terrace, sloping hillside, and level ridge-top adjacent to the Monongahela River. Pumpkin Run, a tributary of the river, bisects the Rices Landing Historic District which is composed of 63 buildings, five structures and four archaeological sites. The descent from a steep hilltop in Rices Landing, down the winding corridor of Main Street to the narrow river terrace below, offers a scenic view of the meandering river and hills on the opposite shore. A century ago the streets were lined with busy shops, taverns and trading posts and Rices Landing was considered the Gateway to Western Pennsylvania. Today, it's a quiet, charming town with a deep appreciation for its' heritage. Attractions include the Greene River Trail Head, which offers 5.2 miles of paved walking/biking trails along the Monongahela River. Also, Pumpkin Run Park, which is open Memorial Day through Labor Day and features a 67-acre park with deep cliffs, a waterfall, picnic area, boat ramp, old mill race and hiking and biking trails.

Southwestern Pennsylvania transitions between the humid continental and humid subtropical climate zones. It has four distinct seasons, with precipitation spread throughout the year. Summers are hot and humid (with occasional heatwaves), while winters are cold and snowy. Fall and spring are mild to warm. Due to its location on the windward side of the Allegheny Mountains, this region receives heavier precipitation than places farther to the west. Many days are subject to overcast skies, with 153 days of the year with some precipitation. Frequent thunderstorms are seen in spring and summer. October is the driest month. Blizzards in the wintertime and tornadoes in springtime are a possibility, but rare.
