Pittsburgh
is located in the west-central region of Pennsylvania and is the second-largest city in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 305,704. In 2007, Rand McNally named Pittsburgh as the United States' "Most Livable City." The city claimed the same title in Forbes in 2010 and The Economist in 2011. Pittsburgh's central business district is a triangular shape which is carved by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, which together form the Ohio River. The city features 446 bridges and is known as "The City of Bridges," and also "Steel City" for its many former steel manufacturing factories. The downturn of the steel industry left no steel mills at all operating in the city, while in contrast, today it supports over 1,600 technology companies. Many of the abandoned steel mills have been renovated into shopping, offices and housing. The city is broken down into five areas: Downtown (also called the Golden Triangle,) North Side, South Side/South Hills, East End and West End. Pittsburgh is a very picturesque city, with many steeply sloped streets. The city has 712 sets of stairs and more vertical feet than San Francisco, Cincinnati and Portland combined. Many of the steep streets have stairs for sidewalks that provide great views of the city. Many bike and walking trails are found along the riverfronts, although the steep hills make biking in the city challenging. Pittsburgh has museums, theater, fine dining and shopping. It's also a major sports city with pro teams in football, baseball and hockey.

Southwestern Pennsylvania transitions between the humid continental and humid subtropical climate zones. It has four distinct seasons, with precipitation spread throughout the year. Summers are hot and humid (with occasional heatwaves), while winters are cold and snowy. Fall and spring are mild to warm. Due to its location on the windward side of the Allegheny Mountains, this region receives heavier precipitation than places farther to the west. Many days are subject to overcast skies, with 153 days of the year with some precipitation. Frequent thunderstorms are seen in spring and summer. October is the driest month. Blizzards in the wintertime and tornadoes in springtime are a possibility, but rare.
