Latrobe
is a town in Westmoreland County, in southwestern Pennsylvania. It's approximately 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. As of the 2000 census, the population was 7,634. Latrobe is located near Chestnut Ridge, which is a very scenic area in southwest Pennsylvania. The small city of Latrobe has several interesting claims to fame. It's home of the Latrobe Brewery, which is the original brewer of Rolling Rock beer. St. Vincent College is also located in the town of Latrobe. It's the hometown of golfer Arnold Palmer and Fred Rogers, the children's television personality. Rogers is buried in Latrobe's Unity Cemetery. In addition, comedian Jackie Mason lived in Latrobe for three years after he ordination as a rabbi. Latrobe is also home of the first banana split, invented by David Stickler in 1904. Today, the city is most widely known for being the site of the training camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. Anheuser-Busch purchased Rolling Rock brands beer in May 2006, but they didn't buy the brewery. In September 2006, City Brewing Company bought the brewery and they then licensed it to the Boston Beer Company in April 2007 as a satellite brewery to produce Samuel Adams beers. However, Samuel Adams beers did not last long. Now the brewery is underway to produce Iron City Beer under contract. Also, the Duquesne Bottling Company has revived their Duquesne Beer, The Prince of Pilseners, at the Latrobe plant.

Southwestern Pennsylvania falls in between the humid continental and humid subtropical climate zones. It has four distinct seasons, with precipitation evenly spread throughout the year. Summers are hot and humid (with occasional heatwaves), while winters are cold and snowy. Fall and spring are mild to warm. Due to its location on the windward side of the Allegheny Mountains, this region receives heavier precipitation than places farther to the west. Many days are subject to overcast skies, with 153 days of the year with some precipitation. Frequent thunderstorms are seen in spring and summer. October is the driest month. Both blizzards in the wintertime and tornadoes in springtime are a possibility.
