Wildwood
is a public park located on the edge of the city of Harrisburg in southeast Pennsylvania. Formerly called Wildwood Lake Sanctuary, the 210-acre park is known for its' 90-acre shallow lake and six miles of hiking trails. Statistically, the park lies within the city of Harrisburg, however, it's maintained by the Dauphin County Parks Department, with help from the Friends of Wildwood and the Pennsylvania National Audubon Society. The park runs parallel to Paxton Creek, which is a tributary of the Susquehanna River. A favorite among nature lovers, Wildwood is a premier center for environmental and ecological studies, educational opportunities and outdoor recreation. Wildwood Park is home to the Olewine Nature Center, a 12,000-square-foot educational facility utilizing the latest green-building technology and dedicated to the study of wetlands and aquatic life. It features bird viewing decks, a nature shop, a library, exhibit areas, a laboratory and a weather station. Other things to do at Wildwood include hiking the trails and boardwalks, biking, and picnicking. Wildwood Park is also spectacular for viewing the natural wildlife and wildflowers within the sanctuary.

Southwestern Pennsylvania transitions between the humid continental and humid subtropical climate zones. It has four distinct seasons, with precipitation spread throughout the year. Summers are hot and humid (with occasional heatwaves), while winters are cold and snowy. Fall and spring are mild to warm. Due to its location on the windward side of the Allegheny Mountains, this region receives heavier precipitation than places farther to the west. Many days are subject to overcast skies, with 153 days of the year with some precipitation. Frequent thunderstorms are seen in spring and summer. October is the driest month. Blizzards in the wintertime and tornadoes in springtime are a possibility, but rare.
