Wellsboro
is a borough in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, approximately 50 miles northwest of Williamsport. Tioga County is in the north-central portion of the state and is called the "Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania." As of the 2000 census, the population of Wellsboro was 3,328. The "Grand Canyon" to which this article refers is actually Pine Creek Gorge, a canyon that has a maximum depth of 1,450 feet and approximately 47 miles wide. It begins south of Ansonia along US Route 6 and has several overlooks that offer spectacular views. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, the depth of the canyon is more than 800 feet. A 12-mile section of it was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1968. The village of Wellsboro is picturesque with streets lined with original, tall Victorian gaslights and quaint shops and restaurants. The town is also home to the last family-owned department store in the country - different departments are located on different levels. The nearby state parks offer opportunities for hiking, biking, canoeing, horseback riding, fishing and camping. In December, Wellsboro hosts the annual "A Dickens of a Christmas" festival where Main Street is turned into an Olde English Marketplace. In addition, impromptu street theater provides entertainment all day long for shoppers. Other Wellsboro festivals include the week-long Pennsylvania Laurel Festival, a tradition since 1938.

Northern Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are normally hot and muggy, and winters are cold with snow, although the snowfall is variable. Some winters bring only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity lasting several days. Thunderstorms are possible in spring and summer. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer, although these type of storms are not the norm. Autumn is sunny and mild, with October being the driest month of the year, making it a good time to travel in the state.
