Gettysburg
is a borough in Adams County in southern Pennsylvania. As of 2010, the population was 7,620 full time residents. Gettysburg is widely known for being a tourist attraction due to its proximity to the Gettysburg Battlefield. The town is also home to the Lutheran Theological Seminary, founded in 1826, and Gettysburg College, founded in 1832, as well as Harrisburg Community College. The borough of Gettysburg is a hub for the area due to the many roads that radiate out from it, providing easy access to Washington D.C., Baltimore, Harrisburg and Hanover, Pennsylvania. The historic Lincoln Highway (U.S. Route 30) also runs through Gettysburg. The Lincoln Highway was the first transcontinental U.S. highway. Gettysburg is arguably one of the most historic spots in the country where you can walk in the footsteps of President Abraham Lincoln, tour the Gettysburg National Military Park, visit the Soldiers' National Cemetery, and tour historic homes of 1863 Gettysburg and the many museums of the area. But, Gettysburg offers more than history. There are also plenty of outdoor recreational activities to enjoy, theater, concerts, dining, shopping and wineries to tour. Gettysburg has golf courses with breathtaking background scenery, lovely orchards, nature trails, and other charming small towns nearby. It also makes a very nice home base for exploring the whole area, and it's just a day-trip away from Washington D.C. where you can tour all the monuments. Visiting the Battle of Gettysburg includes a self-guided audio battlefield tour, a 56-page guidebook and a computer CDROM about the area.

South Central Pennsylvania experiences four seasons, although there are variations depending on the area and altitude. Summers tend to be hot and humid, while winters are cold with snow; the mountainous areas are typically cooler in summer, and receive a lot more snow in the wintertime. July is usually the warmest month with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), although the southern part of the state is often hotter. The coldest time of year is January. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel, as they are moderate in temperature, with less humidity. Peak tornado season in the eastern U.S. is usually between May and July.
