Harrisburg is the capital city of Pennsylvania, located on the east bank of the Susquehanna River in the southeastern portion of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 49,528, making it the ninth largest city in Pennsylvania. Harrisburg is approximately 105 miles northwest of Philadelphia. It's a very historic city that played a significant role during the westward migration in the U.S. and in the American Civil War. Also, the building of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad made Harrisburg one of the most industrialized cities in the Northeastern United States. A U.S. Navy ship, the USS Harrisburg, which served from 1918 to 1919 during World War I, was named in honor of the city. In 2010, Forbes Magazine ranked Harrisburg as the second best place in the United States to raise a family. This is due, in part, to it being a "recession-proof area" because of the high concentration of state and federal government agencies in the region. Harrisburg is at the heart of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country and is just 10 miles from Hershey, Pennsylvania, home of the famous chocolate factory. Harrisburg is home to several museums, including a National Civil War Museum, Doll House Museum, the State Museum of Pennsylvania and guided tours of the State Capitol. Recreational activities include golf, boat rides on the river, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, hiking, camping and cross-country skiing.

Harrisburg Weather & Climate

East Central Pennsylvania is on the northern edge of the Humid Subtropical climate zone. Areas just to the north would be in the Humid Continental Zone. The hottest month of the year is July with an average high temperature of 86 degrees and a low of 66 degrees. Summer is usually hot and humid and occasional heat waves can occur. The area averages 15 days per year with above 90 degree temps although temps above 100 degrees are rare. Fall is a mild time of the year where the higher humidity and temperatures move out. Winter is generally cold. Some winters have snowfall totals that can exceed 60 inches, while other winters may receive very little snowfall. Spring is also a very nice time of year with mild temperatures and occasional rain showers.
