Lancaster
is one of the oldest (inland) cities in the United States. It's located in Lancaster County in south-central Pennsylvania and has a population of approximately 60,000. The city of Lancaster is home to many museums, including the Lancaster Museum of Art and the Lancaster County Quilts and Textile Museum, which features hand-sewn quilts produced by the region's Amish and Mennonite community. Other museums in the city include the Demuth Museum, located in the former home of painter Charles Demuth, the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society Museum and the Heritage Center Museum. The latter also houses the Hands-on House, also called the Children's Museum of Lancaster. This isn't all of the museums in Lancaster - there are several others and one could spend several days exploring all of them. One of very historical importance is the Stevens and Smith Historic Site, a museum that includes the preserved home of Thaddeus Stevens. In addition to its regular exhibits, there is a recently discovered Underground Railroad feature: a converted water cistern used in the 19th century to hide runaway slaves escaping to freedom. Lancaster is also well known for its' shopping opportunities. The largest enclosed shopping center in south-central Pennsylvania is located within the city, as well as a wide variety of downtown shops and boutiques. Lancaster's Central Market, built in 1889, is the oldest continuously operating farmer's market in the U.S. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many visitors come to purchase the unique handmade Amish goods.

Southeast Pennsylvania lies within the humid continental climate zone, but the weather varies according to area and altitude. The state experiences four seasons, but each can vary in temperature depending on location. Summers, in general, tend to be long, hot and humid, particularly in the southeast. The mountainous areas are likely to be cooler and although humid, they are usually less so. Autumns are usually moderate and a pleasant time to travel throughout the state. Winters are cold with snow, especially in the mountains. July tends to be the warmest month, with average temperatures about 80 F. January is the coldest time of year, with temperatures dropping to about 23 F. Tornadoes and floods are possible in southeast Pennsylvania.
