Fort-Loudon
is a small community located in Franklin County, in south-central Pennsylvania. It's known for being the site of a replica of an authentic Colonial era fort located in beautiful, rural Franklin County. It's near many other Revolutionary War and Civil War historic sites near the town of Chambersburg. The original Fort Loudon was built in 1756 during the French and Indian War by Pennsylvania militia and named after John Campbell, the 4th Earl of Loudoun. The fort served as a post on the Forbes Road during the Forbes Expedition that successfully drove the French away from Fort Duquesne. It's difficult to imagine it today, but during the mid-18th century, southern Pennsylvania was considered the wild frontier and could be a dangerous place. By 1753, the French had build three forts within western Pennsylvania, and had found strong allies among the local Indians living there. Numerous attempts made by the Colonial government failed to subdue the French and Indians on the Pennsylvania frontier. By early 1756, the Pennsylvania General Assembly finally decided to take action to defend the settlers, and voted to build a chain of forts along the Blue Mountains from the Delaware River to the Mason & Dixon Line. Fort Loudon was one of these forts. A replica of the fort was built on the original site in 1993. Fort Loudon is part of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, located approximately 8 miles from PA Turnpike Exit 189, about two hours from Washington D.C.

South Central Pennsylvania experiences four seasons, although there are variations depending on the area and altitude. Summers tend to be hot and humid, while winters are cold with snow; the mountainous areas are typically cooler in summer, and receive a lot more snow in the wintertime. July is usually the warmest month with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), although the southern part of the state is often hotter. The coldest time of year is January. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel, as they are moderate in temperature, with less humidity. Peak tornado season in the eastern U.S. is usually between May and July.
