Raystown-Lake
is the largest lake in the state of Pennsylvania, and is located in the south-central part of the state. It was created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by damming the Raystown Branch Juniata River to primarily control floods, provide electricity and for the purpose of bringing visitors to the area for recreational activities. The lake encompasses 8,300 acres and offers swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing and scuba diving. There are also several campsites around the lake, hiking trails, boat launches and restaurants. The surrounding land is still owned by the Army Corps of Engineers, therefore it has never been developed residentially. There are summer homes near the lake - but not right on the waterfront. This makes it a scenic, natural area for visitors, with beautiful wooded hills around the lake and right down to the shoreline. Another attraction near Raystown Lake is the Sheep Rock Shelter archaeological area. Originally a wide ledge over the Juniata River that provided shelter from the elements, human remains from as long as 6000 years ago have been excavated. Raystown Lake is also said to be home to a Loch Ness Monster-type creature called Raystown Ray. Supposedly, a photo of this creature was featured on the Syfy program, Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files. Since the lake is man-made, it's highly unlikely such a creature exists. A spectacular fireworks display is held at the Raystown Lake Resort on Memorial Day Weekend, July 3rd and the Sunday before Labor Day.

East Central Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm to hot with humidity, falls and springs are generally mild, and winters are cold with snow although the snowfall is variable. Some winters bring only a dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. Severe weather is possible, in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer, although these type of storms are not the norm.
