Altoona
is located in Blair County in central Pennsylvania. As of 2006, the estimated population was 47,176. The Altoona metropolitan area includes all of Blair County and the population in 125,527, with approximately 105,000 living within a five-mile radius of the city of Altoona. The city of Altoona began as a railroad town and in recent years has seen an urban revitalization. The downtown area, which is the cultural and commercial center of the city, straddles the once-famous railroads. Popular landmarks in town include the Mishler Theatre, the Penn Alto building (formerly the Penn Alto Hotel), the Gables Building, City Hall, the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, the Jaffa Mosque Shrine Center, and Eleventh Avenue. The city is also home to the 75-year-old Altoona Symphony Orchestra, the Railroaders Memorial Museum, the Juniata Shops of the Altoona Works. Altoona is also home to the Altoona Curves baseball team of the Double A Eastern League, which is a Double A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Mansion Park Stadium in Altoona is recognized as one of the best athletic complexes in the state of Pennsylvania. The city is also home to several parks for public use. They range from simple green space with benches to full athletic fields and playground equipment.

East Central Pennsylvania has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are warm to hot with humidity, falls and springs are generally mild, and winters are cold with snow although the snowfall is variable. Some winters bring only a dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. Severe weather is possible, in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer, although these type of storms are not the norm.
