Bedford
is located in Bedford County, south-central Pennsylvania about 100 miles west of Harrisburg. Settled in the mid-1700s, the borough of Bedford had a population of 3,141 as of the 2000 census. Many historic attractions can be found in, and around, the town of Bedford, as it was a popular resort area during the 19th century. Among its' wealthy visitors was President James Buchanan, who actually used Bedford as his summer home during his White House years. Others who regularly visited Bedford include William Henry Harrison, James Polk, Zachary Taylor, Rutherford B. Hayes and Benjamin Harrison, who visited nearby Chalybeate Springs Hotel. U.S. Route 30, known as the Historic Lincoln Highway, passes through Bedford. Route 30 was the main east-west route until the opening of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in 1940. A well-known landmark in Bedford is a coffee-pot shaped building, which was originally a diner. Bedford is known for its' annual Fall Foliage Festival, held the first two weekends of October. This event includes an antique car show, pony rides for children, many food vendors and arts and crafts. The Bedford Visitors Bureau offers free guided tours of Historic Bedford on Friday afternoons in the summer and autumn. Other attractions include Bedford Springs and Resort, Raystown Lake, and Old Bedford Village, a living history village.

South Central Pennsylvania experiences four seasons, although there are variations depending on the area and altitude. Summers tend to be hot and humid, while winters are cold with snow; the mountainous areas are typically cooler in summer, and receive a lot more snow in the wintertime. July is usually the warmest month with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), although the southern part of the state is often hotter. The coldest time of year is January. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel, as they are moderate in temperature, with less humidity. Peak tornado season in the eastern U.S. is usually between May and July.
