Lake-Ariel is a small, historic community located in Wayne County in northeastern Pennsylvania. There is also a lake by the same name that is one of two of the largest natural lakes in the Poconos region. The lake is spring-fed and said to drop 100 feet in the center. Once known as Jonestown for its' first settlers, Lake Ariel was once home to an amusement park and was a major destination for visitors in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time, the town was also home to several other thriving businesses. Lake Ariel Park was situated in a grove of giant trees on Route 191 and offered a carousels, miniature train rides, a rollercoaster and a waterslide, pony rides and more. There was also a pavilion for music, dancing and picnics. Big name bands appeared at the pavilion and stands sold hot dogs, soda, beer and popcorn. A beach was located across the road from the park and a "shoot the shoot" where people slide down into the water. The park closed in 1958 after the roller coaster was destroyed in a hurricane. An unusually heavy snow storm two years later crushed the remaining rides and buildings. The old Lake Ariel hotel called The Columbia still stands but is abandoned. It was built in 1880 and was right next to the amusement park.

Lake Ariel Weather & Climate

Northeast Pennsylvania lies within the humid continental climate zone and has four distinctly marked seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are generally mild, and winters are cold with snow. Snowfall is variable year to year, with some winters bringing only light snow and others bringing several major snowstorms and accumulation. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with thunderstorms possible in spring and summer. Fall is the driest season of the year and has the lowest humidity. Severe weather is possible, although rare, in northeast Pennsylvania, in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornadoes in spring and early summer.
