Woodward
is a census-designated place located within the larger and more well-known borough of State College in central Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the population of Woodward was 126. State College is the largest borough in Centre County, with a population of over 42,000. This is a college town, home of the University Park campus of Pennsylvania State University. The State College area is often called "Happy Valley," and aside from Woodward, also contains the boroughs of Harris, Patton and Ferguson. State College was ranked the "third safest metropolitan area in the United States" by CQ Press in 2010. In the late 1980s, it was also ranked as one of the "least stressful places in the United States" by Psychology Today. Woodward and all of State College basically evolved as a town to serve the needs of the students of Penn State College. The town offers dozens of restaurants, shops and bars in the downtown area. Each July, it's host to the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, a five-day festival the draws artists from all over the country. Streets are closed off and lined with vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to food. Autumn is an especially beautiful time to visit Woodward and State College when the trees are at peak color.

Central Pennsylvania experiences a climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and muggy, fall and spring are pleasant and mild, and winters are cold with snow. Snowfall is variable with some winters bringing only a light dusting of snow, while others bring several major snowstorms. The average annual snowfall is 19.3 inches. Precipitation is generally spread throughout the year, with eight to eleven wet days per month. In summer, it's common to have heat waves accompanied by high humidity and thunderstorms. It is possible to experience severe weather in Pennsylvania in the form of blizzards in the wintertime and tornados in the summer.
